Welcome Back to a New School Year

Welcome back to a new school year.

I had the opportunity to visit our elementary schools as students returned for transition week. They had the chance to meet their teacher, find their classroom, learn about important safety procedures and become familiar with how school was going to look this year.

As students entered the school, they quickly learned how to work our automated hand sanitizing stations. Students received a dollop of sanitizer that turned out to be more than enough for their little hands, as they worked to hold their backpacks and water bottles. The looks on their faces were priceless as they learned how to use the oversized drop of sanitizer. While it was a new routine, with a little practice and help from their teachers and friends, they will quickly become experts.

Hand sanitizer is just one of the many new things that we must become familiar with for a successful school year. And our success will rely on teamwork. Now more than ever, our educators, staff members, students and families must work together for each child. In the first few weeks, we will place the value of building relationships, getting to know one another by name and appreciating each individual above lessons and curriculum. This also applies to our Virtual Learning Academy students where establishing a relationship remotely with their teacher will take extra time and effort. Teams also require treating one another with kindness and respect. In a year where changes are anticipated, we must be patient, demonstrate grace and flexibility.

Please communicate if you have questions and reach out with any concerns. We want our students to know that we are here to support them, to help them stay safe and to celebrate all of the strengths they bring to school.

Our South Washington County Schools team is strong. Together, there is nothing that we can’t accomplish.

Be a Champion,
