South Washington County Schools is pleased to announce Katie Scholz as the 2018 Coach of the Year by the Central Minnesota District of the National Speech and Debate Association. Scholz is the Head Debate and Assistant Speech Team Coach at East Ridge High School.

East Ridge High School’s debate program began nine years ago. In that time, the Central Minnesota NFL District Committee said in a letter to the school, it has “become a powerful presence in both the local and national speech and debate community.”

The letter continued to say, “East Ridge has several talented coaches that have all worked to make this happen and Katie, from the beginning, has been a critical part of its evolution from a new program to a notable powerhouse. Her work in speech and debate has led to both state and national finalists, as well as a great amount of success on the local circuit.”

The District Coach of the Year Award is presented to the coach who best encourages speech and debate education, fosters cooperation between the speech and debate program and the rest of the school, and plays an active role in the speech and debate program. The award was announced to our district and presented to Katie during the week of April 30.
