University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program (UMTYMP)

UMTYMP (pronounced "um-tee-ump") is an accelerated program for students for are highly talented in mathematics offered through the Mathematics Center for Educational Programs at the University of Minnesota.  Students in grades 5-7 may take a placement test for enrollment in this program.  This is an extremely rigorous, time intensive program that is not appropriate for all talented math students.   If you would like to read more information regarding UMTYMP, please visit their website at

 Students who take the placement test through UMTYMP and are offered a space in an UMTYMP math course for the following school year will receive high school credits towards graduation.  Consistent with district policy, UMTYMP courses completed while in middle school will be a part of a student’s transcript but will not be calculated as a part of their high school Grade Point Average.

Maker Spaces

  • Leonardo's Basement -

Leonardo’s Basement is a kid-friendly makerspace offering classes that give participants the opportunity to design and build.

  • Minnesota Children's Museum

The Children's Museum offers many opportunities to creatively learn and explore.

Math Enrichment

In Continental Math League, students in grades 2 through 8 may participate in three to five meets during the school year. The meets are conducted in the classroom during regular school hours and are designed to improve their problem solving capabilities.

At Algebra for Kids, our goal is to provide quality mathematical materials for parents, teachers, and students, including games, written materials, training, and enrichment.

Destination ImagiNation (DI)

Destination ImagiNation is an exhilarating after-school activity in which students work in teams to solve mind-bending Challenges and present their solutions at Tournament. This is a parent led opportunity for students in grades K-12. If interested, please contact your building principal. 

Minnesota Institute for Talented Youth (MITY)

Minnesota Institute for Talented Youth offers academic enrichment for bright and motivated students in grades one through twelve. Diverse students are given the opportunity to expand their knowledge, challenge their perspective, and inspire their future. 

Reach for the Stars

Reach for the Stars contains nearly 100 academic programs, challenges, competitions, events and enrichment opportunities for K-12 students in Minnesota.

Scholars of Distinction

MDE Scholars of Distinction is a state program that recognizes students in the areas of geography, science, theatre, leadership, and mathematics. High school students in grades 9-12 can register for participation in the recognition program.

Success Beyond the Classroom

Creativity Festival
Creativity Festivals celebrate creativity and problem solving. Students participate in hands-on sessions presented by visual and performing artists and STEM professionals.

Young Authors Conference
Students attend a keynote and interactive break-out sessions taught by established Minnesota authors, illustrators, playwrights, poets, and storytellers.

University of MN Opportunities for Students in Grades K-12

This is a national contest for students in grades 3 through 8 which encourages vocabulary growth and verbal reasoning. The contest challenges students to complete analogies based on relationships among words they have learned. Meets are scheduled in December, February, and May. WordMasters is run through elementary classroom teachers, and middle school English teachers.

Minnesota Youth Council

The Minnesota Youth Council (MYC) is a collaboration of youth and adults working together to empower and mobilize young people across the state to exercise their voices, opinions and ideas and take action on issues affecting youth.
