Minnesota State High School League Approves Winter Sports, Finalizes Fall Postseason

MSHSL LogoOn Thursday, Oct. 1, the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Board of Directors made several decisions regarding fall sports postseason and the regular season for winter sports.

MSHSL decided there will be no state tournament for fall sports this year and the season will conclude with the section championships.

As for winter sports, the MSHSL Board of Directors decided they will proceed with the regular season, but with a 30% reduction in contests and a maximum of two contests per week. 

A decision on how the postseason for winter sports will proceed was not made at the Oct. 1 meeting. Direction from MSHSL could come during their next scheduled meeting on Dec. 3.

Under the current COVID-19 guidelines for youth sports set by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), no spectators will be allowed at indoor events in school facilities. A maximum of 250 fans will be allowed at outdoor facilities.

Below are the dates of when each winter sport will begin its season:

  • Nov. 9: Dance, 15-week season
  • Nov. 16: Adapted floor hockey, 16-week season
  • Nov. 23: Boys Basketball, 17-week season
  • Nov. 23: Boys Hockey, 16-week season
  • Nov. 30: Girls Hockey, 14-week season
  • Nov. 30: Boys Swimming and Diving, 13-week season
  • Nov. 30: Wrestling, 14-week season
  • Nov. 30: Nordic and Alpine Skiing, 14-week season
  • Dec. 7: Girls Gymnastics, 14-week season
  • Dec. 7: Girls Basketball, 17-week season
