MSHSL Moves Football, Volleyball Back to Fall

MSHSL Moves Football and Volleyball Back to Fall
Posted on 09/22/2020

MSHSL LogoOn Monday, Sept. 21, the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Board of Directors voted to reconsider its previous decision regarding postponing some fall activities. Volleyball and football will now return to play this fall. The MSHSL says the plan fits within COVID-19 guidance from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) with approved volleyball and football seasons beginning on Monday, Sept. 28.

On Sept. 22, the Suburban East Conference Activity Directors will meet to discuss more specifics about football and volleyball schedules. As of now, fall practices for football and volleyball will remain in place. Please note that Oct. 15 and 16, 2020 may include scheduled games.

We are reviewing the decision from the MSHSL and are working to determine the following:

  • Whether football will be played within the district or section
  • The process for allowing spectators for volleyball and football
  • How the return to football and volleyball will impact other fall activities (such as marching band, pep band, performance dance and sideline cheer)
  • How the return to football and volleyball will impact winter sports (more information by Oct. 1)
  • Scheduling for spring sports practices

Volleyball Information

  • The season will start Sept. 28
  • The regular-season will be 11 weeks in length with two games per week.
  • Competition will be against conference schools
  • First week of competition will be the week of Oct. 5
  • Students will need to re-register for volleyball and pay the $170 fee along with registration for the season.
  • More guidance will be provided regarding club volleyball and MSHSL volleyball seasons overlapping.

Football Information

  • The season will start Sept. 28
  • The season will play six regular-season games and some form of section competition
  • The first varsity game will be Oct. 9. Lower level games at this point are unknown.
  • Students will need to re-register for football and pay the $170 fee along with the registration for the season.

The MSHSL Board of Directors is a group of activities and/or athletic directors, superintendents, principals and other specialized individuals that have experience in activities from various regions across the state of Minnesota.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this latest adjustment to fall sports.
