Posted on 12/13/2019
Students on their first day of schoolSouth Washington County Schools is getting ready to welcome the Class of 2033 to school next fall. Starting in January, families will be able to enroll their child in kindergarten for the 2020-21 school year.

District 833 has 16 elementary schools and offers two optional choice programs, Nuevas Fronteras Spanish Immersion Elementary or the Multiage Choice Program at Valley Crossing Elementary School. Families who are interested in applying for one of the choice programs are encouraged to attend an information night at the schools in January (see dates below) before the application window closes. Our other elementary schools will be hosting Kindergarten Open Houses in late April, watch for additional information on these events.

Nuevas Fronteras Spanish Immersion Elementary School
Welcome Night: Thursday, Jan. 9, 2020 at 5:30 p.m.

At Nuevas Fronteras Spanish Immersion Elementary School (NFSI), students progress through the same K-5 elementary curriculum as all other District 833 students. However, students at NFSI also learn to read, write, speak and understand Spanish by being immersed in the language at school. Teachers are licensed elementary teachers and are fluent in Spanish. Students will continue on the K-12 Spanish Immersion pathway at District 833, attending Woodbury Middle School for grades 6-8 and Woodbury High School for grades 9-12.

Multiage Choice Program at Valley Crossing Elementary School
Welcome Night: Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020 at 5:30 p.m.

Valley Crossing Elementary School offers a Multiage Choice Program where students of different ages make up a classroom to take advantage of the natural diversity created. Instruction focuses on individual progress in both academic and social-emotional areas. Students have the same classroom teacher for two years (kindergarten and first grade, second and third, and fourth and fifth). This strengthens the relationship with students and families and helps teachers to know their students well.

Both the Spanish Immersion and the Multiage Choice Program are available to students throughout the district and are chosen through a lottery system. The application for these programs is online at and will open January 6 and close on February 5 at 4 p.m.

Students within District 833 boundaries are given first preference for enrollment in the choice programs. Students accepted into the Spanish Immersion program can continue through the K-12 Spanish Immersion Pathway.

Families will be notified of the lottery results on February 7. Families not selected by the lottery will be placed on a waiting list and are encouraged to attend their boundary school Kindergarten Open House in late April.

Additional enrollment information will be shared at the welcome events and in upcoming stories and mailings to incoming kindergarten families.
