More than 9,000 families responded to South Washington County Schools (SoWashCo) fall 2020 planning survey with support for students returning to the classroom as long as public health regulations are followed.

At the beginning of July, SoWashCo sent a survey to families asking for their input on issues relating to student learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When asked if families plan to send their students back to school in the fall, 50 percent say they would send their child back with a few concerns, 40 percent say they would send their child back with health concerns and nine percent say they will not send their child back to school this fall.

Fall 2020 Survey Results

Most families are supportive of both staff and students wearing masks in school. Sixty-one percent of families say they support a requirement of staff wearing masks and 54 percent say they support a requirement of students wearing masks.

Families biggest concerns with sending children back to school are public health regulations not being followed and classrooms not being properly disinfected.

When asked about distance learning, 53 percent of families say their child will return to the virtual classroom but with concerns. Thirty-two percent of families say their child will return to distance learning with a few concerns and 15 percent say they will not have their child participate in distance learning and will consider other options.

Hybrid learning, a combination of distance learning at home and in-person learning at school, is also an option being considered for fall 2020. Of the 9,089 responses, 60 percent of families say they prefer in-person learning at school for most of the time and distance learning at home for some of the time.

SoWashCo Fall 2020 Survey

The results of the survey are being used to plan for three back-to-school scenarios defined by the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) –. Because we don’t know which scenario the state will choose, the results are only being used for planning purposes and do not imply a specific decision by the district.

MDE is scheduled to announce the plans that all schools will follow during the week of July 27, 2020.
